Speedpaint | 1918 Gasmask

A speedpaint I did of a Great War era gasmask. I actually like the way the helmet turned out, but I feel like I kinda failed on the values of the actual mask, especially around the eye area. Oh well. I'm enjoying this practice, it's nice having a 1 hour constraint to force me to make decisions faster.

Speedpaint | Cyberpunk Samurai

I did another speedpaint challenge with my friend, and this time the theme was Samurai. I decided to have my samurai hail from a cyberpunk setting and wear a giant frog mask. I also gave him a short, stocky blade instead of the typical katana. I started with a quick sketch and then painted for an hour. Fun stuff for practice.

Pixel Art | Midnight Harvest

I made a little pixel art piece for a secret Santa event on a pixel art forum I frequent. My secret Santa had a list of things he enjoyed; UFOS stood out to me, and seemed like fun subject matter. He also preferred low color counts, so I tried not to use too many colors. This was fun to make and I hope they enjoy it. Lemme know if you like it as well!

Speedpaint | Wasteland Bearmount

This is another speedpaint challenge I did with a friend. Our theme was bears. I liked my idea but I did not make enough progress in enough time. Practice, practice, practice.

Second Dialogue Animation Attempt

This is my second attempt at dialogue animation. This time around, we got to use our own reference. I shot my reference after about 3 hours of sleep the night before. Needless to say, I looked pretty out of it. But, I think I managed to do a better job on this dialogue than my previous attempt, so I'm pretty happy with that. There's still something off about the eyes and the mouth shapes could have been tighter. I'm learning though, it's pretty friggin' fun!

Stumped | First Environment Painting

Phew. Calling this done. I know I can and will do much better, but finally getting this 'done' feels nice. This is a concept art painting of my environment for my short film, "Stumped". Spent way too much time on this, and I'm still not really happy it the results, but I learned a lot and hopefully will be able to paint even better environments in due time. I suggest clicking on the image for a full view!

Speedpaint | Fighting The Spidermare

I challenged a friend to a 1 hour speedpaint in photoshop. This is what I came up with. Not really proud of it, but these contests are fun practice and I can always go back and make it better if I want, which I might do, because this could turn out. A kid explores a dark fantasy world in a nightmare and comes face to face with a spidermare.

Superhero Sketch

A sketch of a superhero I did during class, instead of taking final review notes. I think I got it. Kinda like how his shape language came out. Messing with shapes and shading.

Machinapolis Storyboard Panels

Here are some storyboard panels from my latest storyboarding project, Machinapolis. I had to create a two minute short film idea for my Storyboarding I class. My story was about a man escaping from a robot city with a mysterious briefcase that he believes will save the world. Thus I'm posting some choice (ie, the best) sketches I did for this project. I thought these ones turned out fairly decently with a good amount of readability.

Speedpaint | Wasteland Orc

This is a one hour speedpaint I did. I guess you can see which parts I spent all of my time on. Still it was good to set a time limit and just work away, and I'm actually surprised with how it turned out. I didn't count drawing the sketch into my painting time, but I did spend an hour on this just to see what I could do, to play with colors, and to of course practice! I might try to finish this out later on, or I might just try some other stuff. Good fun. Next time I'm going to try to cover more ground at a base level before diving into any kind of details though. Makes for a 'unfinished' image look.

Masked Survivor

Late night challenge to draw some badass dude from a friend. I drew a wasteland survivor guy with a Native American inspired mask. I really need to work on my hands and overall linework. But I kinda like how I actually produced something partially from my imagination with the use of reference.

Stumped | Tree Styles

Here are some tree designs I drew for environment & prop design in Stumped. I actually really like how the birch trees turned out, I feel like the spruce tree needs a little more fleshing out. I'm trying to find a cohesive style to tie everything together.

Dialogue Animation First Attempt

This is my first attempt at dialogue animation. A little rough and my professor pointed out some things that would really loosen this up. But I will apply that to my next dialogue exercise. For now, I think this turned out okay. Most emphatically.

Thanksgiving Break Doodles

Here are some doodles I drew during Thanksgiving. I've never used my large sketchbook before (what a shame), but I decided that it was high time to start filling the pages up. So I drew a bunch of random characters between family time and football. (Turns out I'm a basketball junkie.)

DrawJam Week #7 | Yakuza Gangster | 11.21.13

For Draw Jam this week the theme was "Gangsters" or more like "Gangstas." I guess drawing that Asian face influenced me to draw more of a Yakuza gang underling. I kinda don't like how tight the the drawing is, or how the colors turned out, but practice is practice! I was going for a desaturated yet colorful palette. Kinda turned out but I didn't try any skin color.

Asian Guy

I drew this guy for practice. The reference had this really soft but defined lighting that really pulled the features of this guy face out, so  I decided to try and draw him to practice anatomy and facial construction. The more faces I draw, the better. Just so happens that this guy is Asian.

Daily Doodles | 11.18.13

Some doodles I've been scratching away at on a daily basis, whenever I get a spare minute or two. Not claiming they're any good, but I really am trying to get into the habit of just constantly drawing all the time. I do like my double-brained old Jedi Master guy though.

Tough Guy

I drew this guy based on a reference picture of some older guy in an advertisement. My drawing turned out to be about 20 years younger. Then I decided to paint the dude in Photoshop. I'm completely new to color theory stuff, in fact, I barely have much theory at all. But I kinda like how he turned out. He definitely has a Wolverine look, even though that's not really what I was going for when I drew him, ha. Time for bed.

Lunch Doodles | 11.12.13

Mmm tasty. Sketched my dinner before I ate it yesterday. Not as easy as it looks. I sketched this in my daily sketchbook then colored it for about 10 minutes in Photoshop. This picture is the only evidence this sandwich ever existed. Washed it down with some chocolate milk.

Cabbie Colored

Decided to just go ahead and color him tonight. I was kinda going for a look as if he's look at a car or is standing in front of a streetlamp or something, pretty noire-ish. Another color exercise as I literally have zero experience in that department. Fun to to do though, it's exciting to see linework pop when you add value and color!

DrawJam Week #5 | Cabbie| 10.24.13

I drew this random guy for this week's DrawJam. We really didn't have a theme this week as it was last minute, but we all ended up drawing some cool stuff anyways! But yeah, I ended up drawing this cabbie lookin' guy. Gonna drive you through the mean streets of New York under the city streets. I might get around to painting him just for practice.

Space Conscript Color

I decided to go ahead and try to color this guy in Photoshop. I don't really understand how different brushes and tools mix together in photoshop quite yet, but this was a fun exercise in color and it was basically what I was going for: that cold, hard, "I've-killed-dozens-of-people" vibe.

Desert Kamel

A giant robot camel lumbering across the desert. Something cyberpunky I doodled up late at night. Spent way too much time on this. First I did an underdrawing of a camel, then I went back over that light sketch and tried to put in some cool angular forms and structures. I also added in a little cross-legged traveler to help show scale. I think this sucks, but it was a good exercise. I haven't drawn either robotic forms like these or animals, really. Draw draw draw.

Weekend Doodles 11.2.13

A couple of quick doodles I did during conventions at university. Trying to show better form and construction of the head with some quick character drawings. Also, random welding mask designs.

Stumped | Roth - Character Progress 2

More progress on my Roth character sculpt! I'm not touching his face or his hair anymore, so the only thing left to model is his helmet. And eyeball, eventually.

Space Conscript Doodle

Well it's late at night and I'm supposed to be doing homework, but I doodled up this guy instead. He kinda looks like some kind of space convict or soldier or maybe a conscript? I liked his attitude, thought I'd share. Back to homework.

School Environment Sketches

These are some sketches I made quickly from different points around my school. It was cool because when I showed fellow students these drawings, they could recognize the places I had sketched. I'm also trying to practice to show depth as most of my drawings seem to lack that. These are really fun to draw as well! 10,000 more to go!

Stumped | Roth - Character Progress

This is my current progress on my character, Roth. He still has a few issues around the nose and ear, but overall I think he's coming along! I did have a bit of help from my professor regarding some facial structure issues, but for the most part, I have sculpted him up to this point (my second character sculpt in Mudbox). Roth will also have hair and a Viking helmet, both of which are also work in progress. It's exciting to see 2D concepts translating into 3D!

Vietnam PBR Doodle

After watching Platoon and Apocalypse Now, I felt inspired to draw something from Vietnam. I liked the idea of PBR boats, so I doodled up a quick sketch and fiddled around with colors. I'm tempted to try and render something, but I did this pretty quickly just to try some ideas out. Getting more comfortable with a tablet now.

DrawJam Week #4 | Steampunk Western| 10.24.13

This week's DrawJam theme was a combination of Steampunk and Western. This is what I doodled up, hanging out with some other animator buddies. I really hate my linework in this drawing, oh well. Was fun anyways!

October Break | Doodles

Some doodles I drew in my pocket sketchbook during October break while I was away from university. I had fun drawing things relative to the time I drew them, like watching a western or a football game, or sitting in a park or boiling water. I'm trying to get into the habit of drawing nearly all the time, so I carry that pocket sketchbook with me everywhere I go. It's been pretty fun so far!

Stumped | Animatic w/Value Pass

Another pass at my animatic for Stumped. I added tonal value to help show lighting, set the mood, and increase the depth. I still think the drawings themselves are super rough, but the value definitely helps it easier to look at.

Stumped | Environment Sketch

Another shot at sketching out the environment for Stumped. It's a Viking winter wonderland out there, folks. My professor helped me a bit with style and and I tried creating a broader sense of depth while keeping the main stage area 'contained'. Remember all of this is going to be translated into 3d, so I'm trying to get my drawings as close to how it's going to look in CG as possible.
