Stumped | Roth Shader Progress 3

Another update on my character, Roth. I worked on his helmet quite a bit today, and have tweaked his eye settings to make them even more dazzling. I like how the horns and the fur are turning out on the helmet, but the main metal texture/shader needs quite a bit of work. So little time at this point though.

Subject 8 | Anatomy Drawovers

Here are my bone structure and muscle structure paintovers for Subject 8. The first image is a composite of both the bone and muscle paintovers. I started with the skeleton, then proceeded to layer the muscles on top of that. The final image is everything including the original sketch, which looks like poo in comparison. I used Photoshop for the paintovers. I did a rough skeleton sketch, then went back and redrew a much cleaner version, which took quite a bit of time. After that, I drew the muscle lines, then began to block in their basic forms. I had separate layers for muscle bands, tendons, and highlights. This paintover took me nearly all day. Although it took me quite a bit of time, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out so far. I'm planning on rerendering the original sketch so it's much nicer to look at and more closely matches the style of the paintovers. I actually was having fun painting this though.

Sketch | Cold War?

Instead of taking notes in American History II, I doodled this guy instead. We are talking about the Cold War, which is really an intriguing era of paranoia and what if scenarios. The soldier in question is a veteran who's seen Russian action. Ain't a Cold War for him, not even in the winter.

Stumped | Environment Progress

Some more progress on my environment. I made a lot of changes to the hut design and I spent a day making the rocks. That changed quite a bit, and I think it looks pretty decent. Right now, the snow is blowing everything out so I had to bring some contrast back in post, but I'm still working on it. Finally starting to look like an established location!

Drawing Coach | Chinese Woman

One of my classmates has offered to be my 'drawing coach' and this was her first assignment, to draw a woman in under 30 minutes. I found a reference picture and drew this Chinese woman in about 20 minutes. Way too slow, but I got it done. A couple things are really messed up, like her scapula, arm and overall pose but practice is practice.

Sketches | 4-12-14

A couple of sketches I drew up last night. The first one is supposed to be a crazy guy in an asylum or something, I referenced another artist's drawing for it. The second is like a chinese trader or something.

Stumped | Roth Shader Progress 2

More progress on Roth's shaders. I actually did most of this awhile ago, but finally got around to posting it. I have a lot of work to do on his skin and eyes, not sure what to do with the hair, and still have to texture the helmet. Will be fun. He's almost done!

Sketches | 4-11-14

Some sketches I drew tonight. Drew the guy from my head, drew the girl from reference and tried to stylize her face proportions but I ended up making something ugly and I realized what I did after the fact, ha. Made her lips way too far down. Also, I added to much weight to her nose lines and such. But I'm generally terrible at drawing women so practice is needed. And finally, drew up some cyberpunk roughness I copied from the internet. Sketches be sketchy. I'm starting to like this drawing thing more.

Subject 8 | Normal & Distorted Sketches

Here are some normal projections of 8. I feel like the back view is the best contsruction I did as far as anatomy is concerned. I decided that his smokestacks needed to display his personality, as another way to show his emotions since he always wears a mask. I like the idea and definitely need to explore/push it more.
Here are some perspective distortions. These are technically in '4d' since they have four vanishing points. I'm not good at drawing stuff in perspective. Another thing that made this especially difficult was the fact that Subject 8 is so wide at the top when he fades into the distance it's hard to figure out how to bend his shape into that perspective.

Overall though, these are a ton of fun to draw, just wish I understood more.

Subject 8 | Action Character Sketch

Another sketch I did of Subject 8. I tried making his pose more dynamic (something I struggle with) and also tried to make more accurate anatomy. I also tried pushing more perspective (again, with making him more dynamic), and added some more details, especially around his face. He's coming along I think, but I liked the super pushed traps/deltoids I had going earlier, where his boddy was a huge triangle. More sketching to do.

Weekend Doodles | 4.5.14

I have been meaning to upload stuff everyday, I've just been super busy. I have been drawing more though. I'm trying to draw when I do stuff like watch movies or just sit down and stare at the computer (and then my paper). This weekend I shook the dust off a 'How To Draw Managa' book and started sketching. I found some Ghost in the Shell production art online and drew one of my favorite characters, Batou. Trying to get faster and improve life in my linework. Also, my friend requested a hippie Rambo, so I sketched up that last picture. Pretty bad, but oh well. Good weekend.

Character Design | Subject 8 Sketch

I had to come up with a character concept for my Drawing in Motion class, and this guy has been a recurring character in my head. "Subject 8", a hulking behemoth who wanders the wastelands in quiet solitude and only acts when provoked. He's a guardian, pairing up with "Subject 3" to travel the windswept badlands together. This was a sketch I did after some preliminary sketches. I like it where it's headed, needs more work though. I really want to model this guy in 3d. Maybe during the summer when I actually have a little free time.
