Space Conscript Doodle

Well it's late at night and I'm supposed to be doing homework, but I doodled up this guy instead. He kinda looks like some kind of space convict or soldier or maybe a conscript? I liked his attitude, thought I'd share. Back to homework.

School Environment Sketches

These are some sketches I made quickly from different points around my school. It was cool because when I showed fellow students these drawings, they could recognize the places I had sketched. I'm also trying to practice to show depth as most of my drawings seem to lack that. These are really fun to draw as well! 10,000 more to go!

Stumped | Roth - Character Progress

This is my current progress on my character, Roth. He still has a few issues around the nose and ear, but overall I think he's coming along! I did have a bit of help from my professor regarding some facial structure issues, but for the most part, I have sculpted him up to this point (my second character sculpt in Mudbox). Roth will also have hair and a Viking helmet, both of which are also work in progress. It's exciting to see 2D concepts translating into 3D!

Vietnam PBR Doodle

After watching Platoon and Apocalypse Now, I felt inspired to draw something from Vietnam. I liked the idea of PBR boats, so I doodled up a quick sketch and fiddled around with colors. I'm tempted to try and render something, but I did this pretty quickly just to try some ideas out. Getting more comfortable with a tablet now.

DrawJam Week #4 | Steampunk Western| 10.24.13

This week's DrawJam theme was a combination of Steampunk and Western. This is what I doodled up, hanging out with some other animator buddies. I really hate my linework in this drawing, oh well. Was fun anyways!

October Break | Doodles

Some doodles I drew in my pocket sketchbook during October break while I was away from university. I had fun drawing things relative to the time I drew them, like watching a western or a football game, or sitting in a park or boiling water. I'm trying to get into the habit of drawing nearly all the time, so I carry that pocket sketchbook with me everywhere I go. It's been pretty fun so far!

Stumped | Animatic w/Value Pass

Another pass at my animatic for Stumped. I added tonal value to help show lighting, set the mood, and increase the depth. I still think the drawings themselves are super rough, but the value definitely helps it easier to look at.

Stumped | Environment Sketch

Another shot at sketching out the environment for Stumped. It's a Viking winter wonderland out there, folks. My professor helped me a bit with style and and I tried creating a broader sense of depth while keeping the main stage area 'contained'. Remember all of this is going to be translated into 3d, so I'm trying to get my drawings as close to how it's going to look in CG as possible.

Stumped | Rough Animatic!

A (very) rough animatic showing the basic story of my sophomore short situation project. This will be rendered out in 3d eventually, but right now I'm working on the story/character/environment/actions/etc. I enjoy watching this so far, hopefully you will too!

DrawJam Week #3 | Noir | 10.10.13

This was my drawing for this week's DrawJam theme, Noir. I reference a picture and then stylized it some, I really like the stark value shifts that Noir has. 1930's-50's styles are really cool to me. This was pretty fun to draw too! No DrawJam next week because everyone else will be on break!

Stumped | Viking Environment Production Thumbnails

Here are three production thumbnails for Stumped's environments. I really tried to flesh out the world more, and tried to make sure the environment had a consistent style. I also was trying to push for more depth and in the third one I think I'm starting to achieve a bit more of what I want. Eventually one of these thumbnails will be turned into a digital painting. Got to keep refining. Composition, depth.

Also, I'm going to start labeling any art pertaining to Stumped as "Stumped |" followed by whatever the content is. That way I can keep Stumped's art and my other stuff separated.

Viking Winter Environment Sketches

Some design sketches I'm doing for my Stumped's environment. I've decided to place the story during the winter, where cutting wood makes more sense and adds a bit of urgency to the need. I'm also trying to take a more definite stance on style. Just some sketches, but ideas on paper nonetheless.

DrawJam Week #2 | Rome | 10.3.13

Here are the drawings I did for DrawJam Week 2. The theme was classic Rome. I decided to draw a quick gladiator as well as a classic Roman army helmet. Fun to draw with friends! Don't really like either drawing but hey, practice is practice! Hopefully I'll be able to do more for next week!

Character Design | Roth the Viking Boy

Some character design drawings I did for Roth, my viking boy character. I really like the top right one, I think I'll be using that as my character, but I still need to do more exploring with facial features, the helmet design, and of course a body/clothes.
And speaking of helmets, here are a couple I did after my initial boring ones. I still have so much potential I could do, it's exciting! Can't wait to see where my character ends up.

Viking Boy Doodle

Just a quick doodle I did in class today, gearing up for some viking boy character design. I have to design a character for my upcoming short film, Stumped. Already have a name for him, Roth.

Hat Value Study | Digital

I forgot to post this a week or so back, but since I'm still in the early stages of digital painting I found it relevant to post. This was a value study based around the planes of an object. As far as a study goes, I feel confident that I showed a decent amount of form and dimension with just value. Good practice.

Stumped Environment Attempt 2

A second attempt at my Stumped environment. I focused on trying to tell a story, show depth, and get perspective more correct. I think I achieved some of those goals, but I'm going to work on rendering it out further, and pushing my shape language and style.
